Learning unit summary:

This course includes tutorial services and a final examination.

Cleaning is one of the most important maintenance measures when it comes to ensuring a continuous performance of drainage systems. This module expands on the topics covered in module “D-05 cleaning I”, by providing further knowledge on the applications and limits of flushing methods, mechanical cleaning methods and special methods, such as physical and chemical sewer cleaning. Discussed are both the accessible and non-accessible lines, as well as pressure lines. It concludes with providing constructive solutions for the minimization of solids entry into the sewer system, with the aim of preventing the formation of deposits and hence the reduction of cleaning efforts and frequencies.

The course consists of 5 modules covering the following topics:

  1. Flushing methods
  2. Mechanical and Miscellaneous methods
  3. Cleaning of large profiles
  4. Cleaning of pressure lines
  5. Constructive design measures for the reduction of deposit

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • describe the flushing process,
  • differentiate between bed load and suspension waves,
  • identify the effects of bed load and suspension waves,
  • differentiate between flushing devices according to their structural design and technical specifications,
  • identify the operating limits of automatically operating flushing gates (without external power),
  • identify the steps for creating an operational flushing concept,
  • describe the back-up flushing process and identify its application limits,
  • identify mechanical cleaning methods and their applications,
  • determine the various mechanical cleaning boundary conditions based on the pipe diameter, type and amount of deposits ,
  • to select the appropriate rotary cutters chain formation based on the type of deposit or obstacle
  • to identify application areas for the use of physical, chemical and biological processes,
  • identify methods for the cleaning of large profile pipes,
  • identify and describe the methods and processes used for the cleaning of pressure lines,
  • describe the design measures and principles for the prevention of deposits.
