Open Cut Construction (New Construction and Replacement)
The installation of water and wastewater networks is carried out around the world to a large extent in open cut construction. This module focuses on all of the relevant information relating installation and alignment of the pipes, backfill compaction, alternative backfill materials, and the removal of the shoring.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Identify and apply the main rules and regulations,
- Ensure a high quality of workmanship on site,
- Identify and assess construction errors, and
- Optimise the installation process.

The embedment consists of bedding, side filling and initial and main cover. The quality of the embedment is significantly influenced by the installation conditions of the pipes. Other topics of this module include flowable fill for trench backfill, optimized installation methods and compaction tests.
After completing this module, you will have a sound knowledge of:
- Rules and regulations;
- Requirements for the embedment zone and compaction of the trench backfill;
- Process sequences of the open cut method;
- Influencing factors to ensure high execution quality on the construction site;
- Recognizing and assessing errors in construction.
The construction of sewers is still often carried out in the form of open cut construction. Depending on the design, this results in different pipe-soil systems with different external loads on the sewer.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Rules and regulations;
- Requirements for planning, tendering and construction of the pipeline zone, the shoring and the components and building materials;
- Procedures for dewatering and
- Process sequences of the open construction method.
