Trenchless Construction (New Construction)
Today, the installation of gas, water, and wastewater pipelines is still predominantly carried out using the open trench installation. In view of the numerous disadvantages associated with this method, it is imperative that in the future trenchless pipeline construction be considered much more strongly as an alternative in the planning and construction of sewers and pipelines. For a better understanding of the complexity of the inner-city subsoil, this module provides a brief introduction to infrastructures in the urban subsoil.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- prerequisites for a functioning infrastructure;
- options for new pipeline construction;
- procedures for trenchless pipeline construction; and
- advantages over the open cut method.

Jacking pipes have a dual function: they provide permanent support for the excavated cavity and, in the case of single-shell lining, for the pipeline structure.
The subject of this module is jacking pipes made of cement-bound materials, vitrified clay, glass-fibre reinforced plastics, polymer concrete and plastics.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Variants of the constructive design of jacking pipes;
- Tasks of jacking pipes;
- Installation methods depending on the material;
- Variants of pipe connections;
- Functional and dimensional requirements of pipe connections;
- Function and requirements of the pressure transmission ring.

Micro tunnelling refers to unmanned, remote-controlled methods for jacking pipes.
This module covers the various methods, in particular, micro tunnelling with hydraulic, pneumatic, auger and scraper conveyance and soil displacement. The focus is on removal and processing the spoil, drive variants of the cutting head, cutting head design, application in groundwater, measures to reduce jacking forces and measures to remove obstacles.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- cutting head design;
- processing of the spoil in separation plants;
- measures to reduce jacking resistance; and
- dealing with obstacles.

In view of the numerous disadvantages associated with this method, it is imperative that trenchless pipeline construction be considered much more strongly in the future than it has been to date as an alternative in the planning and construction of sewers and pipelines.
This module deals in detail with the procedure and the various components. Emphasis is placed on the different types of shield machines, excavation tools, separation systems, the control and steering station, injection/grouting agent and soil extraction and reprocessing.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- All components of pipe jacking and
- Their function and tasks.
